Literary feature hunt- La primera semana

On page 126 there is a juxtapostion between how the mother "[doesn't] look very happy" and is "unreconizable" in her passport picture with her veil on. The image and text communicating the effects of the veil is juxtaposed to how the veil could potentially effect a wide range of women in the Iranian commmunity; when forced to wear the veil. This panel is effective in indicating how the veil made women "unreconizable" through the fact that the major purpose of a passport is to prove identity. In saying that Marjane's Mom is "uncreconizable" in her passport photo shows the potential consequence of dehuminization of women forced into wearing the veil. How do women create a sense of idividualism when forced to wear the veil?

  1. Dehumanization reminds me of 1984 and the speech that Georgia made about identity and how Winston can show his identity to Julia in private because they were free. This topic also connects to Persepolis and your explanation because the women do not wear their veils at home because they can show their identity in private and that way the have freedom from the veil at home.

  2. I think this idea that you brought up about women being dehumanizied with the veil and her photo makes her unrecogonizable and this is a huge part of the idea of women being degraded and not wanting to wear the the veil and by looking unhappy and this proves that she is against the idea of wearing a veil.
